This is a big week for the band Megafaun. Their three-night Duke Performances engagement begins on Friday, and tomorrow, the Hometapes label will issue their new mini-album, Heretofore. A characteristically seamless blend of traditional folk and modernist influences, Heretofore nevertheless represents a change of pace for Megafaun. Their first two records, Bury the Square and Gather, Form and Fly, were constructed at painstaking length in improvised spaces, while Heretofore was conceived and recorded very quickly in a professional studio, Raleigh’s Flying Tiger Sound. It melds aural sophistication with a marvelously spontaneous energy: the lightning they bottled on their relentless North American and European touring of 2009, which included a stint with the estimable Arnold Dreyblatt. We’re beaming proud to offer you a chance to listen to Heretofore in its entirety a day early—though you’ll want to to pick up a copy tomorrow, as our stream will be disabled after one week.
